While PVL is associated with an increased risk of cerebral palsy and developmental delays, outcomes vary widely depending on severity, and early intervention can make a significant difference.

Most fevers in babies and toddlers are caused by viral infections and resolve within 3-5 days. A fever that lasts longer than 3 days, returns after seeming to resolve, or is accompanied by worsening symptoms warrants medical evaluation. Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) occurs when the blood vessels in the lungs fail to relax after birth, keeping blood pressure in the lungs abnormally high and preventing adequate oxygen exchange. This causes severe respiratory distress and cyanosis (blue skin) typically within the first 24 hours of life. PPHN is a medical emergency treated in the NICU with inhaled nitric oxide, high-frequency ventilation, and in severe cases, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a serious bacterial respiratory infection that is most dangerous for babies under 12 months who have not completed their vaccine series. It begins like a mild cold but progresses to severe coughing fits that can last for weeks. Babies may not "whoop" - instead they may gasp, turn red or blue, or stop breathing briefly during coughing episodes. Pertussis in young infants is a medical emergency. It is preventable through vaccination (DTaP for babies, Tdap for pregnant women and caregivers).

Pet allergies are caused by proteins found in animal dander (skin flakes), saliva, and urine, not fur itself. PFAPA Syndrome (Periodic Fever) in Children

PFAPA syndrome (Periodic Fever, Aphthous stomatitis, Pharyngitis, and cervical Adenitis) is the most common periodic fever syndrome in children. It causes high fevers (often 104-105°F) that recur like clockwork every 3-6 weeks, lasting 3-5 days each time. During episodes, children may also have mouth sores (aphthous ulcers), sore throat (pharyngitis), and swollen neck lymph nodes (adenitis). Between episodes, children are completely well and growing normally. PFAPA is not caused by infection and responds dramatically to a single dose of prednisone. Most children outgrow PFAPA within several years.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often called "forever chemicals," are a group of over 12,000 synthetic chemicals used in water-resistant, stain-resistant, and non-stick products. They have been found in car seats, strollers, bibs, clothing, food packaging, and drinking water. PFAS are called "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in the environment or the body. Research links PFAS exposure to immune system effects, thyroid disruption, developmental delays, and increased cancer risk. While completely avoiding PFAS is difficult, parents can take practical steps to reduce exposure.

PFAS (Forever Chemicals) in Baby Products: What Parents Should Know

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often called "forever chemicals" because they persist in the environment and the human body for years, have been detected in a range of baby products including waterproof bibs, stain-resistant clothing, crib mattress covers, nursing pillows, and food packaging. A 2021 study in Environmental Science & Technology Letters found PFAS indicators in 65% of stain- and water-resistant textile products tested. The EPA classifies certain PFAS compounds (PFOA and PFOS) as having "no safe level" in drinking water. While the long-term effects of PFAS exposure in infants are still being researched, studies have linked PFAS exposure to immune system effects, thyroid disruption, and developmental concerns. To reduce exposure: choose untreated cotton or organic fabrics, avoid marketing terms like "waterproof," "stain-resistant," or "water-repellent" on soft goods, wash new baby clothes before first use, and use PFAS-free alternatives when available.

PFAS and Heavy Metals Found in Baby Formula - Should I Worry?

Consumer Reports testing in 2025 found detectable levels of PFAS ("forever chemicals") in almost all powdered infant formulas tested, and lead in 34 of 41 samples. While the levels found were generally low, the cumulative exposure concern is real. The FDA has increased monitoring through "Operation Stork Speed." No formula brand is completely free of trace contaminants, but the benefits of proper infant nutrition far outweigh these trace exposure risks. Do not stop feeding your baby formula based on these findings.

Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (22q13 Deletion) in Babies

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a genetic condition caused by a deletion or mutation affecting the SHANK3 gene on chromosome 22q13. It is characterized by significant speech delay or absence of speech, low muscle tone (hypotonia), features of autism spectrum disorder, and reduced perception of pain. Many children chew on non-food items (mouthing behavior). PMS is often initially misdiagnosed as idiopathic autism. Seizures develop in many individuals, sometimes not until adolescence. Diagnosis is made through chromosomal microarray or targeted SHANK3 gene sequencing.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder where the body cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, which is found in most protein-containing foods. It affects about 1 in 10,000 to 15,000 newborns. PKU is detected through the newborn screening test, and with early dietary treatment started within the first weeks of life, children with PKU develop normally.

This does not mean you can never use your phone around your baby, but being mindful of when and how you use it during key interaction times is important for your child's emotional and cognitive development.

When Does Your Baby Need Physical Therapy?

Pediatric physical therapy (PT) helps babies and toddlers develop gross motor skills including rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, and walking. PT may be recommended if your baby has delayed motor milestones, torticollis (tight neck muscles causing head tilt), flat head (plagiocephaly), low or high muscle tone, difficulty with balance or coordination, or orthopedic conditions. Early intervention PT is available free or at low cost through your state's early intervention program for children under 3. Research consistently shows that early physical therapy leads to better motor outcomes than waiting to see if a child will "catch up" on their own.

Physiologic Anemia of Infancy - Normal Hemoglobin Drop

Physiologic anemia of infancy is a normal, expected drop in hemoglobin levels that occurs in all babies around 6 to 8 weeks of age. After birth, the baby transitions from fetal hemoglobin to adult hemoglobin, and red blood cell production temporarily decreases as the body adjusts to the oxygen-rich environment outside the womb. In full-term babies, hemoglobin typically drops to about 9.5-11 g/dL and then recovers on its own without treatment. In premature babies, the drop can be more pronounced (anemia of prematurity) and may occasionally require intervention.

Pica is the craving and sometimes consumption of non-food items during pregnancy, such as ice, dirt, clay, chalk, or laundry starch. Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a condition present at birth characterized by three features: a small lower jaw (micrognathia), a tongue that falls back in the mouth (glossoptosis), and often a U-shaped cleft palate. While the diagnosis is frightening, the jaw typically grows significantly during the first 1-2 years of life, and most children's airway problems improve substantially. Walking with toes pointed inward (pigeon-toed or in-toeing) is very common in babies and toddlers and is usually nothing to worry about. It often corrects itself as your child grows and their bones and muscles develop. Most kids outgrow it by age 8 without any treatment.

Is Placenta Encapsulation Safe? Risks Parents Should Know

There is no scientific evidence that placenta encapsulation provides health benefits, and it carries documented risks. The CDC investigated a case where a newborn developed late-onset Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection linked to the mother's contaminated placental capsules. The encapsulation process does not reliably kill bacteria, and the placenta can harbor GBS, E. coli, and other pathogens. The AAP and most medical organizations advise against the practice.

Placental Abruption

Placental abruption occurs when the placenta separates from the uterine wall before delivery, which can reduce the baby's oxygen and nutrient supply. It affects about 1% of pregnancies and ranges from mild (small separation with little impact) to severe (large separation requiring emergency delivery). Prompt recognition and medical care are critical for the best outcomes.

Placenta Previa

Placenta previa means the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix. It is found in about 1 in 200 pregnancies at delivery. Many cases of low-lying placenta detected on mid-pregnancy ultrasound resolve on their own as the uterus grows. When placenta previa persists, a planned cesarean delivery is necessary, and with proper monitoring most outcomes are excellent.

Plant-Based Diet Safety for Babies

A well-planned vegetarian or vegan diet can support healthy growth in babies and toddlers, but it requires careful attention to key nutrients that are more challenging to obtain from plant foods alone. These include vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids (DHA), and adequate calories and protein. The AAP and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics both state that appropriately planned plant-based diets are healthy for all stages of life, including infancy, but supplementation and regular monitoring are essential.
