Stages of Labor
Early Labor
Duration: 30-45 seconds · Every 5-20 minutes apart
Cervix dilates to about 6 cm. Contractions are mild to moderate and may be irregular.
Stay home, rest, hydrate, eat light meals. Time contractions but try to relax.
Active Labor
Duration: 45-60 seconds · Every 3-5 minutes apart
Cervix dilates from 6 to 10 cm. Contractions become stronger, longer, and more regular.
Head to the hospital or birth center. Use breathing techniques and comfort measures.
Transition
Duration: 60-90 seconds · Every 2-3 minutes apart
Final phase of active labor. Cervix dilates from 8 to 10 cm. Most intense contractions.
You should already be at the hospital. Focus on breathing. Pushing stage is near.
When to Go to the Hospital
- Contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute each, for at least 1 hour (5-1-1 rule)
- Your water breaks (note the time, color, and odor)
- You have heavy vaginal bleeding (more than spotting)
- You feel decreased fetal movement
- You have a severe, constant headache or vision changes
- Your contractions are so strong you cannot walk or talk through them
