Back arching in babies (where the baby stiffens and throws their head and body backward) is common and usually caused by normal frustration, discomfort from gas or reflux, or as a way to communicate displeasure. It is one of the most common concerns parents bring to pediatricians. While usually benign, persistent forceful arching — especially during feeding or when associated with other neurological signs — can indicate gastroesophageal reflux, Sandifer syndrome, or rarely neurological conditions.
Febrile Seizures in Babies & ToddlersFebrile seizures are convulsions triggered by fever, occurring in 2-5% of children aged 6 months to 5 years. They are the most common type of seizure in childhood. Simple febrile seizures (generalized, lasting under 15 minutes, occurring once in 24 hours) are frightening but benign — they do not cause brain damage, do not lead to epilepsy in the vast majority of cases, and do not affect development. The seizure typically occurs as temperature rises rapidly, often before parents even realize the child has a fever.
Floppiness (Hypotonia / Low Muscle Tone) in BabiesFloppiness (hypotonia) means a baby has lower than normal muscle tone — they feel "floppy" or "rag doll-like" when held, have less resistance to passive movement, and may have difficulty holding their head up. Mild low tone can be a normal variant (benign congenital hypotonia), but significant or progressive hypotonia warrants evaluation as it can indicate neuromuscular disorders, genetic conditions, or central nervous system problems.
Developmental Regression in Babies & ToddlersDevelopmental regression — the loss of previously acquired skills — is always concerning and warrants medical evaluation. It differs from normal developmental "plateaus" or temporary setbacks. True regression means a child could previously do something (walk, speak words, make eye contact, use hands purposefully) and has now lost that ability. Causes range from autism spectrum disorder to rare neurodegenerative conditions, and early identification is critical for treatment.
Seizures in Babies & ToddlersA seizure occurs when there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain, causing involuntary movements, stiffness, jerking, staring, or altered consciousness. Seizures in babies can look different from those in adults — they may manifest as subtle eye movements, lip smacking, cycling leg movements, or brief stiffening episodes. Any suspected seizure in a baby requires medical evaluation, though many are single events with good outcomes.
Staring Spells in Babies & ToddlersStaring spells — episodes where a child appears to "zone out," becomes unresponsive, and stares blankly — can be normal daydreaming or may represent absence seizures or other seizure types. The key distinction is whether the child can be interrupted: normal staring/daydreaming stops immediately with touch or calling their name, while true absence seizures cannot be interrupted and are followed by the child resuming activity as if nothing happened.
Stiffness (Hypertonia) in Babies & ToddlersStiffness (hypertonia) in babies refers to increased muscle tone — the limbs feel tight or resist being moved through their range of motion. While some degree of flexor tone is normal in newborns (and increases briefly around 4 months), persistent or progressive stiffness, especially if asymmetric (one side more than the other), may indicate neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord problems.
Tremors & Jitteriness in BabiesTremors (jitteriness) in babies are rhythmic, involuntary shaking movements of the limbs, chin, or body. Jitteriness is extremely common in normal newborns and is usually benign — it is distinguished from seizures because it can be stopped by gently holding or flexing the affected limb. While most neonatal jitteriness resolves by 2-3 months, persistent or severe tremors, or tremors that cannot be stopped with gentle restraint, warrant evaluation.
